About Music Media
Some background on Music Media...

Letter from Sabrina Liu, co-founder & CEO:

In its early days, Helping Tibet Foundation focused on supplying the villagers with their basic needs, from soap and toothbrushes to warm jackets and sturdy shoes. When their essentials had been met, Will — who was heading off to college — placed the organization into my hands and Helping Tibet Foundation entered a new era with a new mission: to provide education for the children of the villages.

From our trips to the mountains, I had learned about the children’s thirst for knowledge in spite of the many obstacles: for example, during the frequent power outages, the children would scour their books under the sun with the mountain yaks by day, and next to the candlelight well into the night. Their willingness to surmount all odds to gain more knowledge spurred me to channel my nonprofit’s efforts into their education, and with a decade-long experience in music performance in my toolbox, I set out to host musical benefit concerts in my home state California to spread awareness and attain funding.

I had already started a club at school called Music Media, in which a dozen of my peers and I met weekly to play some tunes and perform for some teachers. On a couple of occasions, we even ventured out into the world and performed for Veterans Homes and senior living communities. To accomplish my new mission for the children of the villages, I decided to incorporate Music Media into Helping Tibet Foundation in 2020.

In recent years, Helping Tibet Foundation’s subdivision Music Media has hosted numerous music concerts with over thirty student musicians, either online during quarantine, or live at restaurants, coffee shops, boardwalks, street gigs, and senior and veteran living facilities. When travel restrictions prohibited me from returning to the villages, I frequently video chatted with my Tibetan friends and virtually grew up with them from across the globe as I listened to their compelling stories, watched them showcase their culture, and laughed with them as they unboxed donations of Legos, science kits, school supplies, and, of course, mountains of books. As both Helping Tibet Foundation and Music Media continue to expand, with weekly additions of new members throughout my state, I am excited to visit the villages once again this summer.
The strength of Tibet’s younger generation to steadfastly pursue their educational aspirations in the face of overwhelming barriers galvanizes me everyday to help the children in their journey of changing the future of Tibet — I hope that you feel inspired by the work we are doing and, more importantly, by the children’s spirit.
